Design by Thomas Jefferson, Library of Congress, Washington, DC.
Jefferson fashioned his first wooden moldboard plow (recreated above) in 1794. By 1814 he started to have the moldboards cast in iron. He wrote to Charles Willson Peale (21-Mar-1815) that it was so light that the two small horses or mules draw it with less labor than I have ever before seen necessary. It does beautiful work and is approved by everyone.
