Franklin Court, Underground Musuem, Philadelphia, PA.
In 1761 Benjamin Franklin invented his Armonica,
which horizontally mounted 37 glass bowls on an iron spindle. Turned by means of a foot pedal, the sound was produced by touching the rims of the bowls with moistened fingers.
Marie Antoinette took lessons on it; Mesmer, used it to put his patients into a deeper trance; composers wrote for it, including Mozart, Beethoven, Donizetti, Richard Strauss, and Saint-Saëns.
