Canova’s work on the statue of Washington began with three-dimensional sketches in terracotta. This is likely his primo pensiero (
first thought) for the sculpture — a way of working through his ideas for the composition quickly, by using clay. Here, Washington is seated and his side is a cornucopia that indicates the prosperity of the United States.
