Marinus Willett, a cabinetmaker, was a leader of Sons of Liberty and a lieutenant colonel in the New York militia. In 1807 he was appointed mayor.
This portrait commemorates the treaty that Colonel Willett negotiated with a federation of Creeks, Cherokees, Chickasaws, and Choctaws led by Creek leader Alexander McGillivray. Note the three Creeks in the far background.
