This monumental painting, the final version (of three) that Trumbull created when he was in England, depicts the events in the European theater during the American Revolution. On the night of of the night of 26 November 1781, British troops, long besieged by Spanish forces at Gibraltar, made a sortie (sudden attack) against enemy batteries.
General George Eliott, commander of the British forces, is portrayed in the center.
