The uniform coat, waistcoat, and pair of knee breeches came to the Smithsonian in 1883 from the Patent Office.
(The ruffled shirt and boots are reproductions.) Although these items were all worn by Washington, they were not
all worn together. The general wore the waistcoat and breeches during the Revolutionary War but did not wear the
uniform coat until about 1789, after he had resigned from the Continental Army to become the nation's commander-in-chief.
