Crispus Attucks

American Revolution - Crispus Attucks, African American Patriot

Crispus Attucks, half Natick Indian and half African American, 6 feet, 2 inches tall (quite a height for that period) was a runaway slave from Framingham, Mass. He was a mariner who went by the name of Michael Johnson. Until shot down, Attucks led the charges against the troops in front of the British Coffee House--the episode known as the "Boston Massacre." The name Attucks was the word for "deer" in the Natick language.
